Your Dancer’s Journey: Why Progress Looks Different for Everyone

At this time of year, it's natural for parents and dancers to start wondering about level placements. Who moved up? Who didn’t? What does it mean?

Let’s take a deep breath together and zoom out. Because the truth is:Not moving up a level doesn’t mean your dancer failed. They weren’t overlooked. They weren’t left behind.

Dance is not like school. There are no "grades" to pass, and there’s no deadline for when a dancer should progress. In fact, thinking of dance through a school lens often sets unrealistic expectations and unnecessary stress for students and families.

Dance Is a Personal Journey

Every dancer progresses at their own pace, and that’s exactly how it should be.Some dancers might move up quickly, while others need more time to build strength, confidence, coordination, or artistry. And those who take a little longer? They’re often the ones who become the most technically sound and expressive performers — because they’ve taken the time to build rock-solid foundations.

At LoMastro, we want to set clear, realistic expectations. For dancers in Level 3 and above, it’s completely normal — and expected — for it to take 1 to 2 years before advancing to the next level.

Here’s what a typical progression might look like:

  • Year 1: Level 3

  • Year 2: Level 3 & 4

  • Year 3: Level 4

  • Year 4: Level 4 & 5

This pacing isn’t slow. It’s steady, healthy, and sets dancers up for long-term success.

Progress Is More Than a Number

Here’s the truth we wish every dancer (and parent) knew:Progress is not just about the number next to your class name.

It’s about:

  • Showing up consistently

  • Developing strong technique

  • Learning to focus and take corrections

  • Growing in artistry and musicality

  • Deepening the love for dance

If your dancer is still in the same level as last year, take a moment to celebrate. That consistency, that commitment — that’s growth. They are becoming stronger, more confident, and more connected to their craft.

Trust the Process

We see your dancer. We see how hard they’re working. We see their potential. And we’re proud of every step they take on this journey — whether it’s a leap forward, a year of refining, or a season of steady progress.

No two journeys look the same. And that’s what makes each one so beautiful.

So trust the process.Celebrate the now.And know that your dancer’s path is exactly where it’s meant to be.
